In March 2002, Smoky Hill Rotary Club introduced this
initiative, which combines various youth programs, such as Hand-in-Hand,
Book Bags, other literacy programs, and Adopt-a-Classroom. This initiative
is intended to increase awareness in the community for the Service Above
Self by the men and women of the Smoky Hill Rotary Club and Foundation.
Adopt-a-Family
SHRC provides food and presents for a needy family during the Christmas holidays. Family
identified by working with local non-profit agency who provides these services year
round. (annually)
Blood
Donor Program
Members, friends, family, etc. donate at local collection sites. (quarterly)
Boy Scout Troop 641
Sponsored by SHRC; meets weekly at Grandview High School in southeast Aurora. One
of the largest Boy Scout Troops in the Denver Metro Area, Boy Scout
Troop 641 meets on Wednesday nights from 7:30 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Troop 641 has been
sponsored by the Smoky Hill Rotary Club since 1982. With more than 20 Eagle Scouts, Troop
641 has an active program with many high adventure outings for Scouts between the age of
11 and 18. Many of the Rotarians in Smoky Hill Rotary Club are Eagle Scouts.
Each year SHRC, in conjunction with Troop 641, sponsors a Valentine Party for the
residents of the Cherry Creek Nursing Home. The scouts earn service hours toward their
leadership advancement requirements, while the residents have a fun day at a time when few
other activities are taking place. SHRC provides funding for the carnations presented to
each resident, along with cake and other party needs

D.A.R.E
(Drug Abuse Resistance Education)

This program is offered to fifth graders throughout two school districts in Aurora. It is
taught by Aurora police officers who have been trained in the DARE
curriculum. Smoky Hill has supported this program for more than 5 years.

Gateway
Battered Womens Shelter
Smoky Hill Rotary Club
has been supporting the Gateway Battered Women's Shelter for more 15
years. In a one ceremony, SHRC presented Gateway with a $1000
check. As expressed by the representative of the shelter, SHRC has
been there to help in other ways. When a water heater need
replacement, or when a tile floor was in need of repair, Smoky Hill
Rotarians were there to help. The goal of Smoky Hill members is to
help with their time and funds when that help will truly make a
difference.
Habitat for Humanity
SHRC members volunteer at work sites throughout the metro-Denver area. (quarterly) Plans
being made to participate in Summer Build 99, which will help construct four houses
in sixteen days!
Hand-in-Hand Reading Program
Partnership with Dartmouth Elementary School; SHRC members read to children who need
remedial reading assistance. SHRC also contributes funds to purchase content books which
have been identified by school as critical to literacy program. (monthly)

Comitis Center
A $1000 presentation to Comitus Crisis Center which was a
new recipient in 2001 with funds donated by hundreds of
individuals and corporate sponsors at the 2001 Puttin' On The
Ritz dinner, dance and silent auction
Interact Club
Overland High School Service Club--Co-sponsored by Smoky Hill and The Rotary Club of
Aurora; meets weekly; 35 members; involved in a variety of community service projects.

K-Mart Voucher Program
SHRC provides $25 vouchers to Altura and Clyde Miller elementary schools in Aurora;
designated school representatives are authorized to shop at local K-Mart for essential
clothing and hygiene items. Vouchers are redeemed at store and SHRC receives invoice for
payment. (monthly)
Miscellaneous
Community Funding Requests
SHRC has consistently been a generous contributor to the following types of community
causes: Thanksgiving Food Baskets (local high school); Community College of Aurora
Foundation; charity golf events, etc.
Prairie Middle
School Literacy
Funds are provided by SHRC to purchase books for remedial reading program that school
operates. (annual, as requested)
RYLA Camp
SHRC annually sponsors students to attend this noteworthy leadership program.
Senior Citizen Fellowship
Visitation
SHRC members visit local nursing home and meet with residents. (bi-monthly)
Whats Right With
Aurora
A positive image education campaign that provides members with basic information about
Auroras diverse resources, e.g. business, community-based service programs, parks,
recreation and other features which demonstrate "Whats Right". |
